I work 2 jobs nearly every day. I live paycheck to paycheck and I am currently falling more and more into debt. I fear for losing my car/home and means to survive. I’m 22 years old.

As a young man I served honorably in the Navy. In the 40 years since, I have been a teacher. Now I am retired. Wealth was never a priority - I did expect a decent retirement income and health care and I believe I saved for it with deductions from every payroll check. I raised 3 children. Now, I live in an apartment with my working daughter and grandson. My retirement doesn’t always cover all of my share of the monthly bills.

I want decent paying jobs for my daughter and the youngsters I educated. I want a decent education for my grandson.

And I am sick of providing welfare to multinationals and being forced to pay for insurance that doesn’t insure, food that doesn’t nourish and taxes that support arms, oil and drug cartels. I am sick of politians loyal to Wall Street.

I am a 28 year old Veteran. I am currently living with my mother, who is struggling to make ends meet. I cannot afford my own home or apartment. I do not even have a job because I do not fit the “specific Criteria” needed for any jobs. Barely anyone does here, and those who do, are barely hanging on. My only permanent gift from my time in the military seems to be my permanent spine injury from C-7 to T-6. Veterans Affairs has ignored my plea but do not mind asking me for money, money I do not have. 3 Herniated Disks and 2 slipped disks plus permanent nerve damage that has caused my fingers to remain numb. I can’t lift 40 pounds without going to the hospital.

I am the 99 percent

The estimated crowd for today’s Occupy Portland was around 10,000. Portland police reported no arrests and said the protesters were “tremendously peaceful and very receptive of police presence.” One of the officers said: “It’s moving to see this large number of people expressing their views and our commitment is to do everything we can to keep them safe.”

I am scared. I am 37 with no job prospects and only Navy disability to survive on with two children. I want to work but no one will hire me. I want to learn but no one will teach me. I spend my days online trying to find some way to earn more than $845 a month, to teach myself new skills, to find a new way of life.

My husband was laid off this year after over 10 years of faithful service with the same bank. I have to travel nearly 40 miles to work a job where I make less than half of what I did two years ago.

I ride a motorcycle to work, in everything from rain to winter weather, so I don’t spend half my paycheck on gas and car maintenance. (Because I don’t make enough for us to survive,) we are living off of my husband’s 401k while he goes back to school.

I am gone 11 hours a day because of having to travel so far for a halfway decent job and barely see my husband and three children during the week anymore.

As of September 1^st, we no longer have health insurance because we simply cannot afford it, and I was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy eight years ago.

My family is bankrupt after my father gave up 30 years of his life to give me and my siblings a good life.

He worked for a 70-million dollar company in New York. After those 30 years, I will still be the one paying off my college loans. I’m looking at a life of debt right now as well as in three years.

My parents are getting divorced, and my father is in rehab after battling the alcoholism that was spawned and made worse by the job he went to day after day. After giving up 30 years to raise us, there is nothing left for me and my siblings. I go to college and I already know how little my degree will actually be worth once I’m finished.

I’m done being told to deal with it. I don’t want my generation to fall into the same hands as the one before us. I want something more for the world around me as well as from it. It’s time people to not only stand up for what they believe, but get something in return for it. I’m done with having sleepless nights, depression, and growing anxiety over what’s going to happen to me and my family right now.

I don’t want sympathy. I don’t want your empathy. I want you to stand next to me.
